When I was giving my rabbits their salad in the morning, I saw punky grooming herself and eating something. I figured out that it was her night feces! Gross right! But this is totally normal, they are eating their cecotropes which is very important to their digestive system. It keeps their digestive system moving fluidly. They ingest their cecotropes in order to get the nutrients they need. So if you ever find your bunny grooming themselves and find them eating something then you know there’re eating their cecotropes.

Helpful Tips

  • If you start to see cecotropes in your rabbits litter box regularly it can indicate that something is wrong. Cecotropes look like small conjoined round balls. Usually when the rabbit is not eating the cecotropes is because they are producing too many due to an imbalance in their gut health. Too much treats or a sudden change in diet or it’s not getting enough hay. Make sure your bunny has a balanced diet.
